Its foliage consists of large, pointed, elliptical, green, drooping leaves about 15-30 cm long and 10-13 cm wide. Its striking, brownish-purple flowers, 5 cm long, bloom in spring before or at the same time as the leaves appear. It is not self-pollinating. In addition, pollination by another, unrelated tree is necessary for fruit set. The fruits, which grow in clusters, are 10-20 cm long and weigh 200-400 g; at first they are green, then ripen to yellow or brown from mid-August to October. The ripe fruit is soft, with a characteristic aroma; the flesh is yellow, sweet and pudding-like in texture, and the taste, some say, is most like a combination of banana, mango and pineapple, a typical tropical flavor. Besides being very nutritious, the pawpaw is rich in vitamins A and C, but also in vitamins B1, B2 and B3 and minerals. When planting, it is important to consider that while young, at 1-2 years old, it is sensitive to hot sun, so shading is recommended. Later, however, it loves full sunlight. As for soil, it prefers well-drained, moist, deep, nutrient-rich, slightly acidic soil. Regular watering is important during the growing season, but we protect it from standing water. When planted in our garden, our plant collection will be enriched with a truly special, exotic, valuable and decorative fruit.
